      <image:title>BRUTAL - Brutal!!!</image:title>
<image:caption>$40.00 After we literally moved out of our LA flat, putting all of our belongings in storage to move into a tent in the Coturri vineyard for harvest, we drove to the San Gabriel Mountains above Los Angeles, for one last time. Throughout our backcountry hikes we had spotted wild elderberry bushes growing in the granite soils of the mountains, at an elevation of around 6500 feet and watched their growth closely. As we arrived, they had finally ripened and we pulled out our pruners cutting as much as we could fit into several 5 gallon buckets that were going to have to squeeze into our already packed cars. Driving up Sonoma Mountain late that night, we saw the red ember glow of the first LNU Lightning Complex fires, silhouetting the ridge line of the Mayacamas, near the French Colombard vineyard we planned to pick in the following days. Our stomachs sunk, terrified that we’d made a terrible mistake leaving our perfectly adequate shelter to live in a tent in the epicenter of fire season. Luckily, the French Colombard was protected because of it’s micro-climate, the breeze from the San Pablo Bay pushed the smoke north away from the vineyard. After an evacuation notice was lifted, we picked 2.5 tons of the French Colombard on August 22, 2020, reserving .5 tons for our sparkling Elderberry co-ferment. The French Colombard and wild Elderberry were foot stomped separately and the juice co-fermented in neutral french oak for 9 days, and was bottled at 1.5 brix. Days after bottling the co-ferment, the Bobcat Fire struck the San Gabriel Mountains, scorching the forest where we harvested the Elderberries just weeks before. Overnight, the habitat that bore us fruits for our first wine of 2020, were altered for generations, if not forever. This wild Elder co-ferment is a time stamp to that special jewel of the upper San Gabriels. As a true experiment and with a small single barrel cuvée we could not think of better label than Brutal, which was suggested and bequeathed to us by Tony Coturri. With only 25 cases, our Ashanta Brutal, is a taste of a place that may take decades to recover its natural state. We feel honored to have been able to hold on to a piece of the San Gabriel Mountains, and share with you all the wonders of a magnificent alpine landscape full of canyons, swimming holes, waterfalls, rushing creeks, incense cedar, bristlecone pine, and indigenous wild Elderberries. No additions or subtractions. Unfined, unfiltered, zero SO2. <image:title>BRUTAL 2021 - Brutal!!! ‘21</image:title>
<image:caption>$40.00 In 2020, we made our first Brutal!!! It was inspired by our backcountry hikes in the San Gabriel Mountains, where we spotted wild elderberry bushes growing in granite soils at an elevation of around 6,500 feet. We watched their growth closely and harvested the fruit, co-fermenting it with French Colombard from Solano County Green Valley. Days after bottling the Brutal, the Bobcat Fire struck, burning115,796 acres in the central San Gabriel Mountains, including where we harvested the Elderberries just weeks before. Overnight, the habitat that bore us fruits for our first wine of 2020, was altered for generations, if not forever. However, a year later in 2021, we returned to the same site, and discovered that while the surrounding forest had indeed burned, the elderberry trees miraculously had not. They were alive, unscathed, and still producing mountain berries. We then wandered deeper into the scorched parts of the forest, curious as to what was left of it. As we walked on a steep trail, the once verdant, flourishing landscape was full of charred trees and stumps as the granite earth itself was blackened. As we continued on stepping over dead and fallen trees, we peered at the barren slope below us and down a canyon saw green life sprouting. Scaling the slope, we wandered down to discover more elderberry bushes producing fruit. Why they had not only survived, but seemed to flourish post fire, we do not know. But once again, we were able to capture a taste of a place that will take decades to recover to its natural state. We feel honored to be able to express the San Gabriel Mountains terroir once again, and share with you all the wonders of a magnificent alpine landscape full of canyons, swimming holes, waterfalls, rushing creeks, incense cedar, bristlecone pine, and indigenous wild Elderberries. <image:title>Sankofa Feioja 2021 - Sankofa Feijoa ‘21</image:title>
<image:caption>$35.00 Feijoa, also known as Pineapple Guava, is native to the highlands of southern Brazil, eastern Paraguay, Uruguay, northern Argentina, and Colombia, but can be found growing in Oakland, CA. We discovered abandoned Feijoa trees aligning a park fence, a few blocks from where I grew up. The park’s 10 acres makes it one of the largest parks in North Oakland and baseball players Rickey Henderson, Frank Robinson and Billy Martin played at it in their youth. In the 1960s, it was a practice field for the Oakland Raiders and in the early 70s, it was a rally and protest space for Black Panther Members, my grandparents included amongst them. It was where I made my first home run, and practiced soccer as a youth. These days, we exercise our energetic puppy at this park, which is how we noticed the Feijoa trees in early December. We had to hop a fence to get to the them, as the trees were inside of a derelict part of Sankofa Academy, the elementary school the park shares a fence line with. Sankofa, an African word from the Akan people in Ghana, translates to— It is not taboo to fetch what is at risk of being left behind. Sankofa’s symbol is of a mythical bird with its feet firmly planted forward with its head turned backwards. The Akan people believe that the past serves as a guide for the future and Sankofa Feijoa is a reflection of just this. It is unknown who planted the Roma and Feijoa trees we found. As gleaners we are constantly engaging with the past, learning from it and carrying it into the present and the future. This wine is a time capsule that remains open, for the story is always evolving. Roma Apples were gleaned in Occidental, CA on an old, unmaintained family orchard. We spent two days hand picking 1 ton of apples and processed the fruit in Occidental. The juice was fermented in French Neutral Oak, and one barrel was reserved for a Feijoa co-ferment. We processed the Feijoa’s in West Sonoma County, halving the fruit, scooping out the fillings and blending them into a thick slush. We added the blended fruit to a 14 gallon carboy of fermenting Roma apples and co-fermented it on Feijoa pulp for one week. The juice was separated from the pulp and fermented to 1.5 brix in French neutral Oak, then bottled under cap. Hand bottled. Hand capped. Hand disgorged. Hand labeled. Bottled with no additions or subtractions. Unfined, unfiltered, zero SO2. <image:title>Mermejita '21 - Mermejita</image:title>
<image:caption>$31.00 ‘Mermejita’ comes from the southernmost vineyard we worked with in 2021 just miles from the U.S. Mexican border. Dulzura, CA is located in the lower Peninsular Range Region in San Diego County, situated at about 1,800 feet elevation. It is surrounded by steep mountains covered in granite boulders and chaparral vegetation. The marble, slates, schist and quartzites soils come from the cooling of molten magmas within the earth’s crust, some 120-90 million years ago. The magmas were created during a convergence of the subduction of an oceanic crustal plate and the North American plate, and over millions of years masses of volcanic rocks accumulating in the earth’s crust metamorphosed the sedimentary rocks already present. A distinctly ancient region in terms of human existence, Dulzura’s soils reveal a geology of the Earth, and we were able to capture a tiny glimpse of that through the making of this Marsanne/Viognier co-ferment who’s vines’ roots were immersed in these primordial soils. Dulzura has a 30+ degree diurnal shift and the Pacific Ocean breeze consistently blows through the region, keeping the vines cool in the heat of summer. The grapes were hand harvested by crew and Will in August. 1 ton of Viognier was directly pressed on top of 1 ton of destemmed and crushed Marsanne into a 1 ton fermentor. Co-fermented for 7 days then pressed into French neutral Oak. Racked off gross lees in March ‘22. Aged in barrel for a total of 8 ½ months. No additions or subtractions. <image:title>Callisto '21 - Callisto ‘21</image:title>
<image:caption>$33.00 Callisto hails from the Parducci "Lost Vineyard" in thw Round Valley of Covelo, CA. Sitting at 1,400 ft. elevation, Round Valley is the only Mendocino Valley AVA with a Continental Climate rather than a Maritime Climate. The valley often sees 45+ degree diurnal shifts in the summer, with highs nearing triple digits and lows in the mid 50s. To get there, you wind through steep, narrow roads that curve alongside the Eel River, a 196 mile long river that ends (or begins depending on perspective) in the Pacific Ocean just south of Eureka. The Eel River is the third largest watershed in California. In 1989 the "godfather" of Mendocino wine, John Parducci planted an experimental test vineyard. The test was to determine the viability of Round Valley as a new viticultural site, 8 rows of Pinot Noir (Martini Clone 13) and 2 rows of Chardonnay (Martini Clone 4) were planted in the Talmadge very gravelly loam soils of the valley floor. Parducci made wine with the test vineyard fruit in 1993. Picking October 22 at 22.6 Brix, there's no record of any other wine being made from the vineyard since and it is unclear why the experiment was never expanded upon. 28 years later, in what feels like a clear testament to the drastic climate change being experienced in northern California, we picked the Pinot and Chardonnay nearly 2 months earlier on August 27th at 23 Brix. As we left Round Valley, hauling the fruit on the 12’ trailer attached to our truck, we climbed the steep mountain we just descended from the day before, and once again traced the sinuous path of the Eel River, we came across a steep bend that dropped into the river, we spotted a bulky, thick-coated, four-legged animal sprinting across the road and up a hillside. We locked eyes, briefly, with its orange glow piercing our souls. As quickly as it appeared, it disappeared and became our inspiration for naming this wine Callisto—the Greek goddess transformed into a bear. The Pinot and Chardonnay were processed together with 20% whole cluster, the rest gently crushed and de-stemmed on top and left to ferment for one week on the skins and then pressed to neutral oak. Aged 9 months in barrel bottled June 2022. No additions or subtractions. Unfined, unfiltered, zero SO2. Alcohol By Volume: 13.2% Style: Red Wine Variety: 80% Pinot Noir + 20% Chardonnay Vineyard: Claus Vineyard -1800 ft. elevation AVA: Round Valley Farming: Organic Harvest Date: 8-27-21 Bottling Date: 6-23-22 Cases Produced: 65 Fiber Art: Laura Basanta Tasting Notes: Dry cherries with earthy undertones. We fermented on the skins for 6 days, then basket pressed into French neutral oak. We left the wine un-topped and after 3 months, a strong layer of flor had developed. We aged the wine under a veil for 21 months. In 2021 we picked both Colombard and Chenin Blanc from the same 50 year old vines in a classic California workhorse vineyard in Solano County's Green Valley. The Colombard was foot stomped and allowed to macerate on the skins for one week and then pressed to neutral oak. In December of '21 it was added to the flor aged '20 Colombard to begin our first year of multi vintage Solera style aging. The Chenin Blanc was direct pressed into French neutral oak to slowly ferment in barrel. Aged for 8 months in barrel it was homogenized with the Solera French Colombard for one month and bottled in June of 2022. No additions or subtractions. Unfined, unfiltered, zero SO2. <image:title>Embryo II - Embryo II 2021</image:title>
<image:caption>$40.00 In the 1960s, Chenoa’s grandparent’s Stephen and Justine Ashton, were young New York expats who left for the West, eventually landing in Glen Ellen, CA. They were entranced by the small, bohemian town 8 miles north of Sonoma, after communing at spiritual gatherings on Sonoma Mountain where they met working in a garden. After 6 days of knowing each other, they were married and soon found a property on the foothills of Sonoma Mountain, certain this would be where they would spend the rest of their lives, which they indeed did. It was covered with centenarian Oak, Eucalyptus, Madrone and Manzanita trees, and below their quaint farmhouse was a small orchard in a 6 acre field. Chenoa’s grandfather, a stern and serious man who never drank more than two glasses of wine, was inspired to plant a vineyard after hearing stories of his Sicilian grandfather who made wine in Palermo. At this time, Sonoma Valley’s wine industry was just burgeoning, and the hot varietals were Riesling, Pinot Noir, and Gewurztraminer, which Chenoa’s grandparents planted (minus the Riesling) on 3 acres. They were in their mid-20s, bursting with creativity and vivaciousness, determined to fulfill every dream they could conjure. In 1980, Chenoa’s grandparents planted a Syrah vineyard on 3 acres of a sloping hillside southwest of their house. The clay soils were dense with a thick layer of impermeable dirt. Since the vines were on a slanted hill, all rain water rushed to the bottom of the vineyard, leaving the upper half quite stressed. However, the vines, as they do, prevailed, and Chenoa’s grandparents held decades of vintages from the site. The same site Embryo II was birthed, 42 years later. The same site, that was the only survivor after the Nuns Fire in 2017 destroyed Chenoa’s grandparent’s property. The same site where Will and Chenoa made their first wine in 2019 and brought them to pursue their wine making project in its entirety. A time capsule indeed, here she is. Embryo II, the second iteration and expression of a terroir shepherded by generations. The Syrah was hand-harvested by Will, Chenoa, and Chenoa’s aunt, Sarah Ashton. It was de-stemmed and crushed into an open top fermentor, where it was punched down twice a day by hand for two weeks. It was pressed into French Neutral Oak where it aged for 8 months, and racked once on NYE. No additions or subtractions. Unfined, unfiltered, zero SO2. <image:title>Gewurtztraminer 2021 - Lagom</image:title>
<image:caption>$35.00 In the 1970’s Chenoa’s grandparent’s planted Gewurztraminer alongside their Pinot Noir in Sonoma Valley on the base of Sonoma Mountain. The vines flourished until 2017, when the Nuns Fire jumped the highway and surged through the family’s property, decimating the vineyard, and the family homestead of over 50 years. In 2020, we discovered through the tall jungle of uncut grass, that shoots from the Pinot Noir and Gewurztraminer had regrown throughout the years. We restored 160 vines that were seemingly dead and in 2021 we harvested this rare, resilient fruit. Historically, the Gewurztraminer was blended with the Pinot Noir, but we wanted to highlight and preserve the beautiful rose petal aromatics of Gewurztraminer, so we floated the whole cluster Gewurztraminer on direct pressed French Colombard (2021) for 6 months in a large stainless barrel. Bottled aged for 6 months, Lagom, a Swedish word for not too much, not too little, the perfect amount, is singing in her prime. She is delicate yet rounded, and full of rebirth, as she prevailed and regrew even after devastation. No additions or subtractions. Unfined, unfiltered, zero SO2. <image:title>Sankofa Feioja 2022 - Sankofa Feijoa ‘22</image:title>
<image:title>Phoenix 2021 - Phoenix ‘21</image:title>
<image:caption>$60.00 In the 1960s, Chenoa’s grandparent’s Stephen and Justine Ashton, were young New York expats who left for the West, eventually landing in Glen Ellen, CA. At this time, Sonoma Valley’s wine industry was just burgeoning, and the hot varietals were Riesling, Pinot Noir, and Gewurztraminer, which Chenoa’s grandparents planted (minus the Riesling) on 4 acres. They were in their mid-20s, bursting with creativity and vivaciousness, determined to fulfill every dream they could conjure. The Pinot Noir became the main varietal, and Chenoa’s grandparent’s hand-grafted the vines on St. George rootstock, and planted the vines themselves, with the aid of family and friends. The vineyard was organic, dry-farmed, head-trained, and the vines produced award winning wines until 2017, when the Nuns Fire destroyed the family’s property. Believed that the vineyard was dead, the family let the site overgrow and it wasn’t until 2020, when Will and Chenoa were clearing the land to build a permaculture garden in early spring, that they discovered new vines alive and growing horizontally from the base of the old vine, in a tall uncut jungle of grass. Inspired, they immediately and painstakingly walked row by row discovering and staking the new vines. To their surprise, by the early summer 160 vines that were once seemingly dead had been reclaimed and were bearing clusters of grapes. A year later, Will and Chenoa harvested the fruit, as their work a year prior assisted the vineyard in producing 1000lbs. A true miracle, considering the vineyard was deemed insufficient after the scorching blaze. A full circle moment, Will and Chenoa returned to where they first made wine in 2019. Named Phoenix after Chenoa’s grandfather’s production company, this is a symbol of resilience, resurrection and reimagination after devastating loss. The Pinot Noir was hand-harvested by Will and Chenoa. 25% Whole cluster, and 75% was de-stemmed and crushed into an open top fermenter, where it was punched down twice a day by hand for two weeks. It was pressed into French Neutral Oak where it aged for 14 months. No additions or subtractions. Unfined, unfiltered. We spent 3 days handpicking this site, walking atop Mars like soils, submerging ourselves into the upper canopy of the vines where beautiful, tight clusters dangled in the leaves shade. A laborious but rewarding process, we harvested 1000lbs in the scorching harvest heat, and gleaned fruit that would have otherwise been forgotten. The clusters ripened slow and evenly, resulting in a fruit forward yet completely dry, medium bodied Cab. Miyakma, also known as Maiya'kma, is the indigenous word given to the Mayacama Mountain range by the Wappos, and means howling mountain lion, a presence that has encompassed the valley’s for thousands of years. The grapes were hand harvested by crew, Chenoa and Will in August of 2022. The site has 20 different varietals planted, and the day of the pick we were able to decide the co-ferment/field blend we wanted to make. 50% Viognier, 35% Marsanne, 10% Pinot Gris, 5% Sauvignon Blanc. The Viognier was direct pressed, while the Marsanne, Pinot Gris and Sauvignon Blanc were destemmed and fermented on the skins for 10 days, then pressed out and blended with the Viognier. Aged in french neutral Oak, racked twice and aged in barrel for 9 months. No additions or subtractions. Unfined, unfiltered, zero SO2.
